Understanding different types of hair lines in men

What is a Hairline?

The hairline is the area on the scalp where hair growth occurs. The hairline’s shape is determined by genetics. Certain hairstyles can make it look like you have a different hairline than you actually do.

A man’s hairline can reflect other features of his face and vice versa. That’s why it’s important to have a balanced face and head shape. Sometimes, a person may have a great head shape but a bad hairline. In these cases, some things can be done to make the hairline look better and give you the symmetry that you deserve.

Which is the Most Attractive Hairline for Men?

The middle hairline is one of the most lucrative types, which is achieved after men hit puberty. A middle hairline depicts a standard forehead and is always preferred over a low or high hairline.

What are the Different Types of Hairlines in Men?

Hairline refers to the upper portion of the scalp on the forehead and front hairline. This determines your overall appearance and confidence level. With time, hair loss is natural. It is healthy hair regrowth that makes your hair look natural and attractive.

There are different hairline types in men, like cowlick, straight, rounded, widow’s peak, receding, middle, high and low hairline. Look at some of the common types of hairlines below:

  1. Cowlick Hairline: Cowlick hairline is a problem for most men. It is a characteristic of men with curly hair which grows in every which way. It looks worse if there's more hair there. It may occur anywhere on the scalp but are often found at the crown.

  2. Middle Hairline: Men with middle hairlines have a proportionate look to their foreheads and it may sometimes become uneven or asymmetrical. It may also appear round or straight.

  3. Low Hairline: Low hairlines in men are most common among men who have not yet experienced hair loss. When a low hairline is straight across, it is referred to as a juvenile hairline.

  4. Receding Hairline: Also known as male pattern baldness, is a hereditary condition. This condition is also referred to as androgenic alopecia. Receding hairlines can take on the appearance of high hairlines that continue to show more scalp as they recede and cause an ‘M’ shape if it continues to form for a long time.

What is male pattern baldness?

Male pattern baldness also termed androgenic alopecia is a condition wherein hair thinning occurs in adult men in a pattern. Almost half the world’s male population experiences this condition by the age of 40.

Each hair strand has a growth cycle and with male pattern baldness, this cycle gets weaker, leading to shrinkage of hair follicles. It produces shorter and finer strands of hair. Eventually, the growth cycle ends and no new hair growth takes place.

What are the Causes of a Receding Hairline?

A receding hairline is majorly linked with hereditary factors but there are other factors as well like over-styling hair using heating tools, choosing tight hairstyles, using artificial colours on hair, eating a poor diet that is high in saturated fats, smoking cigarettes, etc. that determine a person’s receding hairline. Eating processed foods that contain added sugars and preservatives also aggravates the condition.

Excessive stress and anxiety have also been linked to receding hairline. To stop your hair from receding, bring down your stress levels by following stress management techniques, relaxation techniques, meditation or by joining support groups and exercising regularly, etc.

How to Stop Receding Hairline?

  1. Biotin: Biotin is a vitamin that can be found in foods like nuts, eggs, sweet potatoes, onions, oats, etc. You can also take biotin tablets for hair growth. These supplements slow down hair loss. Biotin is also thought to reduce inflammation and improve cognitive function.

  2. Minoxidil solution: This solution helps in quicker hair regrowth by strengthening the hair follicles. It also increases the size of hair follicles, thus promoting thicker hair growth.

Some medications like Rogaine and Finasteride can also be used to treat receding hairlines.
