Postpartum Hives: Causes & Treatment

It is not uncommon for many women to have an allergic reaction post-childbirth. In fact, as many as 90% of women will experience some form of allergic reaction following childbirth according to a recent study published in the journal JAMA Dermatology. The study found that the most common form of allergic reaction is a skin rash known as prurigo of the postpartum period. This type of rash usually occurs during the third week following childbirth and can be extremely painful. It will appear as a red or pink patchy, itchy rash which will typically look worse at night.

Hives can occur anywhere from 5 days to 1 year after giving birth depending on the individual. In most cases, itching occurs around the waistline but can spread anywhere on the body. Hives can be treated with antihistamines and steroids depending on the severity of the symptoms.

The term "hives" refers to a collection of bumps or welts on the skin, which may occur alone or in a pattern. Individual bumps are called wheals. Wheals can change in size for a few minutes or up to a few hours. They can last from 3 days up to a few weeks.

Hives can be induced by several different sets of factors, including seasonal allergies, medications, stress, infections, trauma, exercise, certain diseases and urticaria pigmentosa.

Postpartum hives are also referred to as 'nuchal pruritus' (NP) and are a skin disorder affecting mothers following pregnancy. It is characterized by severe itching in the back of the neck, shoulders and upper chest.

Treatment involves identifying and eliminating triggers, which may be any of the following:

  1. Fresh laundry inside the home
  2. Emotional stress
  3. Certain foods, such as nuts, chocolate, beverages with caffeine or alcohol
  4. Temperature changes
  5. Clothing or fabrics that are irritating
  6. High levels of house dust mites
  7. Skin infection or rash
  8. Medications containing menthol or camphor
  9. Bleaching products used around the house
  10. Sunlight
  11. Parasites on animals or pets kept at home or visiting home frequently
