Oily Scalp: How to Manage and Get Rid of It?
No one likes when their hair gets oily the next day after washing their hair. Everyone hates that greasy hair look. Having glossy and shiny hair is one thing that everyone loves but having sticky, oily, and thin hair is something no one digs these days.
An oily scalp can be very uncomfortable. It can cause itching and seborrheic dermatitis. It can also make your scalp prone to infections and hair fall as well. Especially during the summer season when you touch your hair at least 15 times in an hour, you feel that your hair starts to get oily very quickly.
The oily and greasy scalp also makes your hair feel dirty and it affects your looks and moods too. You just don’t feel good in an outfit you put on and you just want to wash your hair all over again the very next day.
What Causes Oily Scalp?
The greasy and oily scalp can be caused due to many reasons. Some of them are:
1. Touching your hair frequently
If you are in a habit of touching your hair or flicking them every 30 seconds then it will get greasy. Our fingers and palm have destructive oils which are not good for our scalp. Our fingers can transfer oil to our scalp making our hair oilier.
2. Using conditioner on the scalp
Some people don’t know how the conditioner works and how we should apply it. Conditioners are to provide frizz-free hair and that’s why they should only be applied to your hair strands and not on your scalp. Applying conditioner to our scalp can cause it to get greasy quickly.
3. Humidity
If you live in a city which is always hot or the summers in your city are very humid then chances are high that you will be left with a head full of oily scalp and hair even after shampooing. Humidity can create moisture in your hair follicles.
4. Unhealthy and Improper Diet
Consuming a lot of salty, sweet, and spicy food, cold foods, dairy products, oily foods, etc. can cause a greasy and oily scalp. High-fat diets increase the oil production on your scalp and cause your hair follicles to increase the sebum production on your scalp.
5. Using Heat Emitting Products
If you are in a habit of frequently using heat products on your hair then you may experience oily and greasiness on your scalp the same day of application of the products. Some people think that heat is known to dry your hair out and most people use it just for securing their hair from getting greasy but it does the opposite for your hair.
6. Hormonal Imbalances
Hormonal imbalance during a certain age can also cause your scalp to get greasy easily. When you hit puberty or are taking some medication for a certain underlying disease then chances are that your hair follicles may produce extra sebum.
7. Deficiency of Vitamins B
A deficiency of Vitamin B can cause greasy and oily scalp and hair. Biotin is known as a hair vitamin and it promotes hair health. Deficiency of this vitamin can cause oily and greasy hair which can also cause itchiness and dryness.
8. Using Hair Serums
Hair serums are meant to be applied on your hair strands and not on your hair scalp. Applying serum on the scalp can cause your hair to get greasy and oily quickly. Serum increases the sebum production on your scalp which can cause your hair strands to be sticky.
How to prevent your hair from getting oily?
1. Shampoo properly
A lot of people don’t know how to shampoo their hair properly. They focus on their hair strands more as compared to their scalp. But you should wash your scalp properly as your strands will be cleaned up when you will rinse your hair.
2. Keep your hairbrushes clean
Wash your combs or hairbrushes at least twice a week as it also gets dirty. The dirt in the hairbrush can make your hair sticky and oily.
3. Avoid touching your hair
Don’t touch your hair every 2 seconds. Try to get rid of this rid as soon as possible. Constantly touching your hair can make your hair very greasy. Every time you touch your hair try to think that your hair will get dirty and oily just to avoid it.
4. Wash your hair post-workout
During workouts, the sweat which is accumulated on your scalp can make it feel extra greasy and can be very annoying. Do make it a habit to wash your hair with shampoo after you work out.
5. Stay away from heat tools
Avoid using heating products daily as they can steal the natural oils from your hair. If you already have an oily scalp then heat tools are your worst enemies. They make your hair greasy and weak.
